Anne Cubberly – Bone Stories

March 4 – April 11, 2009

RECEPTION
Friday, March 6, 6 - 8 pm

LA MOTTA Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the work of artist, Anne Cubberly, in an exhibition entitled Bone Stories, opening on Wednesday, March 4th and continuing through Saturday, April 11th, with an opening reception on Friday, March 6th from 6-8 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

The artist will treat the gallery space as a diorama for this exhibition, creating a site-specific installation comprised of figurative sculptures and papier mâché lanterns. Anne Cubberly’s imaginative sculptures and creations are fashioned from recycled materials that include wood scraps, wires, cables, bottles, and prosthesis parts. Paper mâché heads and masks personalize her figures, and her recent works incorporate kinetic elements comprised of simple mechanical components that render the works interactive. Cubberly’s investment in using recycled materials as the fundamental element of her sculptures is as much a statement of her interest in conservation as it is an expression of her philosophy surrounding the concept of community. Each sculpture is thereby imbued with a sense of history and personality relating to the origin of its collective parts.

Anne Cubberly is one of Connecticut’s treasures. Her large-scale puppetry, kinetic sculptures and installations have been presented at museums and universities throughout the region. She was named the first artist-in-residence at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 2006/2007, and was commissioned by the museum to create a series of performances for their Aetna Theatre. Three performances from this series of four, (Drop, Whoosh and Fire), were co-written by Cubberly, who also created all of the giant puppets, masks, costumes and props for the fantasy plays. The artist was recently selected to participate in the Peabody Essex Museum’s Trash Menagerie exhibition, opening in 2010 in Salem, MA.
