New Gallery Opens in Hartford Inaugural Exhibition: Collage Drawings by Jeff Cowie

Janice La Motta, former owner of Paesaggio Fine Art and Paesaggio Gallery, is pleased to announce the opening of a new gallery and art services business. LA MOTTA FINE ART is located at 11 Whitney Street, Hartford, CT and will offer services in art appraisals, art brokerage, art consulting for artists, and the sale and resale of fine contemporary art.

The inaugural exhibition at LA MOTTA FINE ART will be a one-person exhibition featuring the collage drawings of Jeff Cowie. An opening reception will take place on Friday, March 14th from 6-8 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Jeff Cowie’s collage drawings are composed of photographic reproductions that are intricately cut and positioned to create new contexts for the images. Cowie combs through images culled from various books that reference American Folk Art, Greek and Roman statuary, mechanical parts and early American furniture. The resulting images manifest mysterious narratives and curious, new objects. Cowie has a keen eye for juxtaposing seemingly unrelated imagery from which he builds compositions rich with subtle innuendo. The collages also reflect the artist’s acute awareness of spatial complexity, whether in drawings composed of two elements set in dialogue with one another, or a marvelously congested assemblage of intricate elements.

Mr. Cowie is a visual artist and set designer and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Among his awards are the Rockefeller / NEA Individual Artist Grant; The Dallas Museum of Art's Kimbrough Award; the Fellowship for Visual Art at the Museum of Fine Arts; Houston, the Edward Albee Foundation Fellowship; the 2003 CT Critics Circle Award, and a 2001 Drama Desk Nomination. Jeff will make his Broadway debut as set designer for Horton Foote's play, Dividing the Estate in the fall. Mr. Cowie lives and works in the West End of Hartford with his partner, Michael Wilson, Director of Hartford Stage.
